The Sterling & The Fine: A Study in Silver Purity

Two Sides of the Same Mirror

Both are metals I can use in my creations. Two distinct grades of silver: Sterling (.925) and Fine (.999). While they share the same DNA, they can serve very different purposes. Here's what I learnt in my jewellery class and understanding the difference can help you choose the right anchor for your day.

Fine Silver (.999): The Purity of the Healer

Fine silver is as close to the earth as it gets—99.9% pure, with no copper or nickel added.

  • The Look: It has a "whiter," more ethereal glow than any other metal. It looks less like jewelry and more like captured moonlight.
  • The Feel: Because it lacks hardening alloys, fine silver is softer and more malleable. It’s the "cashmere" of metals.
  • The Wellness: Historically, fine silver is the most hypoallergenic and antimicrobial choice. Because it’s so pure, it is more resistant to tarnish, making it the perfect choice for delicate pendants and earrings that sit close to your skin and your heart.

I hand make some of my lovely jewellery pieces in .999 fine silver!

Sterling Silver (.925): The Strength of the Warrior

To make silver strong enough for the "Art of the Stack," we use Sterling—an alloy of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper.

  • The Look: It carries a slightly warmer, more intense luster that we’ve come to associate with classic high-end jewelry.
  • The Feel: This is your structural metal. It has the "heft" and "grit" needed for rings that knock against tables and bracelets that move with your pulse.
  • The Wellness: Sterling provides the gravity mentioned in our audit. It is the metal of boundaries and protection, built to withstand the impact of a busy life without losing its form.

The Temperature of Transition

Regardless of purity, all silver shares a unique sensory trait: Thermal Conductivity. Have you ever noticed the brief, crisp "chill" of a silver piece when you first put it on? It’s a sensory wake-up call. As the metal warms to your unique body temperature, it stops being an accessory and becomes an extension of you.

Whether you choose the soft, hypoallergenic whisper of Fine Silver or the structural, weighted command of Sterling, you are wearing a metal that is alive, reflective, and purely intentional.

Always remember that You're pretty
