How to Layer Necklaces: Start With the Lengths
There is something about a perfectly layered necklace stack that just works. Two or three chains sitting at different lengths, catching the light as you move, looking effortless and intentional all at once. The good news? Getting there is simpler than it looks — and it all starts with one thing: chain length.
Get your lengths right and everything else falls into place. This is Part 1 of the A+A Layering Guide, and we are starting here because it is the most important foundation of any great stack.

The four lengths you need to know
Most necklaces fall into one of four standard lengths. Each one sits differently on the body and plays a different role in a layered stack:
|
Length |
Where it sits |
Best used for |
|
14" |
Very close to the throat |
Worn alone as a choker or as the shortest layer in a stack |
|
16" |
Just below the collarbone |
The most popular everyday length — the anchor of most stacks |
|
18" |
At or just below the collarbone |
The sweet spot for layering — works with almost every neckline |
|
20" |
Mid-chest |
Perfect as the longest layer — adds depth and visual interest |
The golden rule of layering
Aim for at least 2 inches of difference between each layer. This gives every chain its own space to be seen and prevents tangling. The classic trio that never fails? 16" + 18" + 20". It works on almost every neckline, every body, every outfit.
A+A tip: If you are just starting out, begin with two chains — a 16" and an 18". Master the two-layer before adding a third. Simple always wins.
How neckline affects your stack
The neckline you are wearing matters more than most people realise. Here is a quick guide:
• V-neck and scoop neck — the most versatile necklines for layering. All four lengths work beautifully.
• Crew neck — start your stack at 18" and go longer. Shorter chains will disappear into the fabric.
• Off-shoulder or strapless — longer chains (18" and 20") create a stunning effect against bare skin.
• High neck or turtleneck — skip the necklaces or wear a single long chain (20"+) over the top for a bold look.
